Ruthless Jets in second half blitz

It had been a tense first half of football at the North Ipswich Reserve as both the Ipswich Jets and the Mackay Cutters tried to find a way through each other’s defence.

At the break it was the Jets leading 10-4. The Jets had scored two tries through Billy McConnachie and Nemani Valekapa, while the Cutters had got on the board with Curtis Rona.

The half didn’t start well for the home team with the Cutters punishing an early Ipswich mistake to level the score at 10-10 after 41 minutes.

For the next 39 minutes the Ipswich Jets played a brand of football that must keep opposition coaches awake at night. The Jets’ stunning try-scoring blitz saw them score five tries from their next six sets of six.

It started where all good backline’s attack starts with the halves. Dane Phillips diving over and it finished with a flying Carlin Anderson and Marmin Barba showing great skills and finishing anything that Josh Cleeland and Matty Parcell could create.

The Cutters had no answers to the 52 point second half onslaught that saw milestone man Brendon Marshall score in game 150 after a huge Josh Cleeland break down the centre of the field.

Anderson then backed up Marshall on the inside to score his first of three tries in the second half and suddenly the Ipswich Jets had gone from 10-all to 26-10 in 13 minutes.

Broncos’ big man Marty Kennedy then showed his power and speed by busting the Cutters up the middle and, hearing the call of Marmin Barba, delivered a pass that saw him score a try under the sticks.

Cleeland again attacked the Cutters line and came out the other side and found Anderson who scored his second try.

Anderson wasn’t yet done for the night and scooped up a ball from the Cutters and ran the 90m to score with not a single Cutters’ player able to keep up with the rookie.

The Jets 50 was brought up by ironically enough the man playing his 50th game – Matty Parcell who strolled through and scored his sixth try of the year.

Amongst all the carnage, Barba didn’t just limit himself to scoring tries but converted eight from eight kicks as well to finish the night with 24 points.

Parcell showed his skills by chip kicking for himself, but Barba had other ideas running through and beating the hooker to the ball to score his second try.

Cleeland, who received the Jets players’ player, dummied and went the 70m needed to score and bring a halt to the Jets attacking carnage at 62-10.

The Jets had shown their defensive capabilities all game by keeping Cutters’ danger men Anthony Mitchell and Zac Santo quiet before they set about putting points on the board in a truly ruthless manner.

The Jets now turn their focus to the Hunters while the Mackay Cutters play the Sunshine Coast.
